Everyone knows Hearson’s Cove at sunset with the iconic red dirt tracks and the  murujuga national park screams 'Pilbara'.

Heck, I once posted a family session in a Dongara facebook group for travellers and a random lady commented on the photo.

The photo in question by the way^

She said 'Hearsons cove up in Karratha a beautiful part of the world, will always remember my time up there'.

Iconic? Yes. Memorable? Also yes. But is it a little overused in the photography scene up here? I think so. So do some of my past clients.

So what about the tucked away but obvious places? The stretches of coast that locals know about and frequent? These are the places where the light dances just right, the ocean meets the land in unexpected ways, and your photos look less “posed” and more like you stumbled into something timeless. I made it my mission this year to capture my families in locations that are less aesthetic but still make for a magical session.

So here are three of my favourite lesser-known photography gems around Karratha and Dampier: I hope this helps you recognise the beauty in ordinary places!

1. Nickol Track – Rugged & Real

ree

The Nickol Track is one of those places that doesn’t try too hard — it’s just rugged Pilbara beauty at its finest. The red dirt road weaves through spinifex and scrub, the ridges catch fire at golden hour, and the sky stretches out forever.

I like to capture negative space in my photography: it says a lot without being a lot. Thats why the start of the nickol track is a photographers dream! There is the unmistakable red dirt and that darn Pilbara grass which isn't really grass.

In this spot there are 2 areas perfect for family photography or maternity photography in Karratha. Because the kids can run around and be free and messy. For couples or maternity sessions, that wild backdrop turns every moment into something cinematic. It’s raw, it’s real, and it’s oh-so Pilbara.

2. Dampier Esplanade – Coastal Calm with Character

ree

The Dampier Esplanade might not sound hidden, but it often gets overlooked for its quieter charm. This stretch of coastline is full of little nooks —distinct black rocks, sandy patches, boats bobbing in the distance — and it’s got a salty, laid-back vibe that’s perfect for relaxed portraits!

I love photographing here just as the sunsets. One of the only places the sun sets over the water in this part of the North West of Western Australia. Kids can explore the shoreline, couples can wander barefoot, and the colours are just chef’s kiss.

ree

I name drop this location when couples request the beach but not hearsons Cove because it's overdone- and you know what they're not wrong. Though I think if you live in the Karratha you need atleast one iconic photo at the infamous Hearsons cove!

ree

The esplande is also one of those spots that feels different every time you go. Sometimes it’s calm and reflective, sometimes it’s windswept and wild — both give you photos that feel alive and full of story.

3. Mulataga (Back Beach) – Untamed Beauty

ree

Mulataga, better known as Back Beach, is one of those local treasures you either grow up with or discover by accident. It’s raw and untamed — stretches of sand, rugged dunes, and views that make you feel like you’re standing at the edge of the world.

ree

I've captured families on either side of the back beach road- both sides of this gorgeous landscape make for epic photos!

It’s my go-to for families who want that barefoot, windswept, “kids running wild while mum laughs” vibe. It’s versatile enough for everything from maternity to couples’ Karratha engagement sessions.

Why These Spots?

Photography doesn't have to be about polished studios or perfect backdrops. It’s about connection, authenticity, and capturing your story against the landscapes that feel like home. Nickol Track, Dampier Esplanade, and Mulataga aren’t just pretty spots — they’re pieces of Pilbara soul, ready to be woven into your family’s memories.

So next time you’re craving photos that don’t look like anyone else’s, these are the places to start. If you're ready to experience one of these with me behind the lens... let's chat!
